The homes ringing the main lake and Lake Saint Louise are the original Lake St. Louis: contemporaries, ranches and split-levels from the late 1960s through the 1980s on sloping, wooded lots with docks at the bottom of the yard. The locations are unrepeatable. The houses themselves are often forty or fifty years old.

Renovating for the view

The best lakefront renovations reorient the house toward the water. That means removing the wall between a closed kitchen and the lake-facing living room, enlarging window and door openings with new headers, and rebuilding the deck so the railing does not block the sightline from a seated position. Cable or glass rail is popular for that reason.

What old lake houses need

Expect original aluminum windows, modest insulation, aging electrical panels and lower levels finished long ago with paneling over bare concrete. Hillside lots send water toward the uphill foundation wall, so drainage corrections usually come before interior work. Tall decks on steep ground require engineered footings and careful access planning.
