Remodeling in New Town at St. Charles

New Town is a traditional-neighborhood development on the north side of St. Charles, begun in the mid-2000s, with canals and lakes, narrow streets, front porches, rear alleys and a town center. Its architecture is governed by a detailed design code, which is what gives it a coherent look.

Homes are tall and narrow on small lots, with detached or alley-loaded garages, lots of exterior trim and often a full unfinished basement.

Projects that suit New Town homes

Basement finishing is the main way to add space, since lots leave no room for additions. Porches, balconies and the extensive painted trim need regular maintenance, and we replace failed wood with rot-proof material in matching profiles. Garage and carriage-house spaces are finished as offices or studios where the rules allow.

The design code

Exterior changes, including colors, doors, windows, railings and fences, must follow the New Town architectural standards and receive approval. We work from the code when specifying materials so submittals go smoothly.

Permits

The City of St. Charles issues permits. Properties in the historic districts also go through the city's landmarks or historic preservation review for exterior work.
